Houston pools do not really "close" for winter
Unlike much of the country, most Houston-area pools stay in use, or at least stay filled and running, through the winter. There is usually no need for a spring-opening, fall-closing ritual the way colder climates require.
The real risk: a hard freeze
What Houston pools do face is the occasional hard freeze, like the historic cold snap in February 2021. When temperatures drop well below freezing for an extended stretch, water sitting in exposed pipes, pumps and filters can freeze, expand and crack equipment or plumbing.
How to protect your equipment before a freeze
- Keep water moving: running your pump during a hard freeze keeps water circulating so it is less likely to sit still and freeze in place.
- Protect exposed equipment: pumps, filters and exposed pipes are the most vulnerable parts of the system.
- Know your equipment: automation, timers and salt systems can be set up to help manage a cold snap, but only if they are in good working order beforehand.
After a freeze
If a hard freeze does hit, it is worth having your equipment inspected afterward. A crack or leak is not always obvious right away, and catching it early is far cheaper than discovering it once real damage has been done.
